10 May 2019: (Pesaro) Goodbye Rome, Train to East Coast (Mileage: 6/6)

We caught the 9:30 train, with one transfer, to Pesaro on the central East Coast of Italy. All pretty simple, 4 hours to Falconara Marittima, a 30 minute wait, then 30 minutes more to Pesaro. We assembled the bikes in the station lobby and rode 1.5 miles to our guest house. We have a large living room/kitchen, large bath, and small bedroom with twin beds.

The route is accurate. Our train took 5 hours.

We will start biking tomorrow. After checking in, we rode down to the Adriatic Sea shore, walked about, had dinner at a neighborhood restaurant, and returned to rearrange gear for tomorrow. We booked a hotel in Urbino and face a fairly short but perhaps steep 25 mile or so ride.

Dog of the Day. He accompanied us from Rome to Falconara Marittima, and only barked when a pit bull walked past his spot on the train.

Last Supper. What else but pasta in Rome. Carbonara (mine) in the foreground and minestrone soup and bolognese (Christopher's) in the background. We both agreed that a 1 liter carat of house red was too much, so tonight's libation was limited to a single beer each.

Nicely lit at night be we had no idea of this building's function.

We each dipped a toe into the Adriatic Sea. Tomorrow off towards the Tyrrhenian Sea.

A square-plan fortification built for Costanzo Sforza between 1474 and 1483, it stands next to the city walls, but still remains outside. Rocca Costanza is the largest fortification in the city and is surrounded by an imposing moat that in 1500 Cesare Borgia, occupied the city, is filled with sea water. Later the fortress passed back to the Sforza, the Della Rovere and the Papal States. In 1864 it became a prison; it will remain so until 1989 when subsequent restorations return it to citizenship, becoming a summer venue for cultural events such as the Rossini Opera Festival.

Nearly identical to one in Vatican City, this was on the coast in Pesaro.

Two art deco homes in Pesaro.

The Giro d'Italia visits Pesaro on Stage 8, 18 May 2019. Signs are already up on the roads that will be closed.

Our Pesaro Guest House. Breakfast is laid out. As we are in the penthouse, our hosts walked up one flight and prepared a cappuccino for me and tea for Christopher. Cereal, fruit, yoghurt, juices, and more sweet breads than we could eat.

Sun bathing and al fresco dining, but we didn't need any more sun and nothing to dine on. I did hang some laundry to dry.
