14 May 2019: Gubbio to Assisi (Mileage: 31/120)
We had a relatively short ride, so we lingered at our B & B to let the rain abate. We used our toaster oven to heat our gift loaf of bread for breakfast, packed, and then looked for a bike shop. For some reason, the directions to the bike shop eluded us, so we headed for Assisi. Conditions were 50F, windy, cloudy, with occasional short intervals of sun. We stopped for a light lunch midway. The initial 2/3'rds was over a ridge followed by a flat section before a 3 mile climb into Assisi. Our maps.me route zig-zaged through Assisi, affording a nice overview of this amazing medieval city on the side of a mountain.
Lacking the time to explore Assisi today, we will do so tomorrow morning, then leave midday for the short ride to Spello.
Parked next to our B & B. From Wikipedia:
The Citroën 2CV (French: "deux chevaux" i.e. "deux chevaux-vapeur", lit. "two steam horses", "two tax horsepower") is an air-cooled front-engine, front-wheel-drive economy car introduced at the 1948 Paris Mondial de l'Automobile and manufactured by Citroën for model years 1948–1990.
Citroën 2CV with Matching Trailer. A couple stopped me to ask if we were Dutch, due to the orange color. I told him, No, I selected this color for visibility.
Didn't John Mellencamp write about Little Pink Houses, so why not with pink pigs, cows, red Bike Friday, and little orange trailer?
Views of Assisi
Assisi was perhaps the busiest city we visited outside Rome. This was one of many huge, underground car parks. We passed one lot with 20 parked buses. Outside of the climb and cobblestones, the best way to enter Assisi is by bike.
Carousel Opposite the above church.
Wooden Clock Store
One of many nuns walking about Assisi. Also, many Franciscan monks.
Not Our Restaurant. Our hotel recommended this restaurant, and on-line reviewers said it was the best in Assisi. But for the 2nd night in a row, a recommended restaurant was closed. So we wandered into the gallery next door.
Gallery owner, artist, and artist-in residence.
Gallery Cat
Dog of the Day. Yes, the gallery dog.
Roman Temple of Minerva. Of course, the pagan aspects have been removed and converted to Roman Catholic sensibilities.
Spaghetti with Sausage. I thought it was a tomato sauce with cream, but it was just cream.
More images of Assisi tomorrow, as we had the morning to explore.
